Hannah Cooke

Volunteer and Member of the Committee

I’m Hannah, an NHS Physiotherapist and mother of two – Elijah aged 3, and Thea aged 18 months. I was diagnosed with post-natal depression after having my second child, having not suffered after my first. I always considered myself as being mentally strong so the diagnosis hit me hard and initially, I was reluctant to admit and talk about my mental health condition.

I started attending Sunflower Family Support Group when it first began, in January 2019, and met some lovely mums (many of which I would now call friends) who had no judgement as they had all experienced hard times too. I found the support invaluable, there were pairs of hands to cuddle or play with my baby/children, and space to be ‘me’ on a good day or bad.

As I made my way through my recovery journey, I felt strongly that I wanted to volunteer so I could try and give something back. I joined the committee and then also decided to volunteer at the Stafford group when my children could be looked after at home (they are a big distraction!). Whether it be listening to others, sharing stories, talking about things other than mental health (!), or making the tea/coffee, I thoroughly enjoy being able to support in whatever way I can.
